LocalRoads Monthly Reminder

With today's high gas prices, it's worth taking a few minutes out out of our day to make minor modifications that will improve our gas mileage.

Attempt to keep your vehicle's tires properly inflated and be sure to check the pressure frequently. Improperly inflated tires create excess drag on your vehicle, decreasing gas mileage. Additionally, refrain from using premium fuel if your car or truck does not require it. Using it is an unnecessary expense, as it does not always improve performance. Also, be sure to use the thinnest viscosity oil that your vehicle manufacturer recommends.

As for driving, avoid excessive warm-up time in cooler temperatures - modern engines do not require it. When driving on the highway, try to keep your speed at 55 miles per hour or less. Gas mileage decreases sharply when driving regularly above 55 mph. Empty your trunk! Extra clothes, overdue library books, tools, and the bag of aluminum cans that you've been meaning to take to the recycler all add unnecessary weight to your vehicle. Whether you drive a manual transmission or an automatic, drive in the highest gear possible.

Finally, consider carpooling or utilizing a Park-n-Ride as alternatives to driving solo. And as always, be sure to check this website weekly for the latest traffic information!
